Duke St Business Center
Help Restore Essential Business Databases!
You may have heard that the DSBC is closing. This is untrue. The Duke Street Business Center is NOT closing. The DSBC is managed and operated with State funds by the Lancaster Public Library (LPL), an independent nonprofit institution. The Library System of Lancaster County (LSLC), a separate organization funded by the Lancaster County Commissioners, recently eliminated all County funding for business services including heavily used databases. The DSBC as well as the business community, job seekers, and nonprofit organizations depend on these essential resources. In late December, the LSLC announced it will not renew the following databases in 2014:
- Business Insights-EXPIRED
- One Source-EXPIRED
- First Research-EXPIRED
- Hoovers-Expires March 31st
- Simply Map-Expires May 31st
- Uniworld-Expires July 31st
Despite this enormous setback, the Lancaster Public Library is keeping the DSBC open to continue serving the needs of the business and nonprofit communities. We understand that the databases are a vital resource, and we are actively seeking alternative sources of funding. Knowing that ReferenceUSA is the most critical database, we intend to find a solution to restore it as soon as possible.
What can you do to help?
- Donate to our IndieGogo Campaign
We at the Lancaster Public Library understand that the databases are a vital community resource and we have raised a portion of the funds necessary to restore Reference USA and hope to offer this resource again soon. But we still need to raise more money to provide remote access! Please donate to our Indiegogo Campaign and pass this link on to others in the community. If we all work together, we can make this resource available to our entire community!
- Sign this Petition Ask the County Commissioners to step in and direct the Board of the LSLC to restore funding for the databases. (The Board of the LSLC is appointed by and reports to the Lancaster County Commissioners.)
