JOB SUMMARY: Lancaster Public Library is seeking part-time Circulation Assistants for the Lancaster Public Library East-Leola Branch and the Lancaster Public Library West-Mountville Branch.

The Circulation Desk is often the primary service point for library patrons so strong customer service skills in a busy environment are required. Responsibilities include assisting patrons with the use of the library by checking out materials, answering questions about patron accounts, and generally assisting patrons with the use of the library services and the facility. When the Circulation Desk is not busy, the Circulation Assistant will perform other tasks in support of library operation as directed by supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to cheerfully respond to patron requests, to work cooperatively in a team environment, to be flexible as the demands of the job change, to become familiar with the location of library resources, to handle the fast-pace of telephone and in-person interactions, and to assist library patrons with the use of the library. Must be committed to excellence in the provision of library service.

A high school diploma or equivalent and basic computer data entry skills are required. The position includes evening and Saturday hours.


JOB SUMMARY: The Lancaster Public Library has an opening for a part-time Summer Library Assistant in the Children and Teen Services Department at its Lancaster City Branch. In addition to meeting the information needs of patrons while staffing the Children and Teen Services desk, this individual assists in implementing a busy schedule of programs for children, tweens, and teens .

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting patrons with the use of library resources and services.
  • Recommending materials to patrons based on age, reading level, and interest.
  • Supporting the Summer Reading Program by enrolling children and teens, preparing prize materials, distributing reading logs, tracking participation, and checking families in before special events.
  • Assisting with shelving as needed.

The position requires both a Pennsylvania Criminal Record Check and Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance.

QUALIFICATIONS: A High School diploma or equivalent is required. Proficient in English, with strong written and verbal communication skills. Working knowledge of computers required. Strong commitment to public service, highly motivated, quick learner, organized, reliable and able to adapt to changing user needs. Scheduling flexibility required, as work schedule may vary based on the needs of the department. Current work schedule includes Saturdays and some weekday evenings.
Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to cheerfully respond to patron requests, become familiar with library resources and services, work cooperatively in a team environment, and meet an established work schedule.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Public library experience. Experience working with children and teens. Proficiency in Spanish, sign language and other languages desirable.

A Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Clearance are required for all libary staff.

Process for Filing Clearances: The Criminal Clearance form must be submitted and processed first either by paying by credit card online or by mail. Once the processed Criminal Clearance is returned, the applicant should:

  • make a copy
  • file the original for future use
  • attach the copy to the completed Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance form
  • mail to the address at the top of this form at the Department of Welfare

Failure to follow the correct procedure will cause unnecessary delays in processing.
